Where it all began...

When collating market research at the beginning of the process, we reached out to charities and organisations that we thought may be able to get involved.

On Wednesday 30th October 2019, two members of UNIFI, Emma and Milly, attended an Independent Age UK event at the Design Museum in Kensington, London.

The event was a discussion about the emotional wellbeing of older people - a concern that totally aligned with UNIFI’s aim.

A highlight of the event was meeting Joyce Williams, a strong advocate for positive ageing and reducing the use of “ageist” terms such as ‘you look good for your age’. Joyce embraces the word ‘old’ and believes that people shouldn’t wish to stay young as happiness peaks in old age and preaches that we should enjoy it.

During our conversation with Joyce, she told us that she has difficulty understanding the language that younger generations use and she felt as though a language barrier was one of the main reasons for the generational gap. This in turn inspired the pink category of our card game, ‘Learn the Lingo’, where we have incorporated old and new sayings on a flip card, which allows each end of the age spectrum to learn something new and have the ability to teach a loved one a saying from their childhood.

This opportunity was a milestone moment in UNIFI’s journey as it enabled us to spot the generation gap that we are now working hard to bridge.

Thank you to Independent Age and Joyce Williams.
